An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, published in December 2025, found that YouTube mentions showed the highest correlation with brand visibility in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews: roughly 0.737 on the Spearman coefficient. The metric included brand appearances in the video's title, description or transcript.
The figure matters because in that study it outperformed signals such as branded web mentions, branded search volume and classic link metrics. Another interesting detail also emerged: the raw volume of YouTube mentions correlated slightly more strongly than those same mentions weighted by video views.
Another analysis, the YouTube AI Citation Study 2026 by OtterlyAI, examined more than 100 million citation instances over 30 days. Within the social media and video category, YouTube accounted for 31.8% of citations. Its presence was not uniform either: Perplexity and Google AI Overviews generated most of the YouTube citations, while Gemini and Copilot barely cited it during the analysed window.

These figures must be read with care. OtterlyAI analysed videos that had already been cited, so its conclusions explain the repetition of a citation better than the initial probability of entering the source set. Even so, the pattern is consistent: generative systems appear to reward reference value and structure more than social popularity.
The transcript turns video into retrievable information
A natural conversation can be perfectly clear to someone watching the full video and, at the same time, useless to a machine retrieving an isolated fragment.
Compare this phrasing:

The second sentence keeps its meaning even when extracted without the previous thirty seconds. It names the action, the entities involved and the expected effect. It is a unit of information that is far easier to retrieve and cite.
This logic matches the academic work that formalised the term GEO. The paper presented at KDD 2024, based on a benchmark of around 10,000 queries, observed visibility improvements of up to 40% when sources were enriched with elements such as statistics, quotations and references. It did not study YouTube specifically, but it does support the general principle: a source gains generative usefulness when it offers precise, verifiable and well-supported claims.
A good GEO transcript, therefore, should not be an unedited download of automatic speech recognition. It is worth correcting errors, removing ambiguities that block comprehension, preserving the meaning of each contribution and splitting the content into thematic blocks with descriptive headings.
Why chapters matter more than they seem
Chapters are not only a user-experience improvement. They work as the video's table of contents.
Google can use the timestamps in a YouTube description to show key moments. According to its documentation, chapters can also be declared through Clip or SeekToAction structured data when the video is embedded on a website. A fifteen-minute file therefore stops being an opaque unit and becomes a set of navigable sections.
From a GEO perspective, this multiplies the retrieval surface. A video titled "Technical SEO guide for ecommerce" can include independent chapters on crawling, facets, canonicals, internal linking and structured data. Each segment answers a specific intent and can act as a reference point.

1. Start from an intent, not a broad topic
"Talking about artificial intelligence" is not an intent. "How to measure whether ChatGPT recommends my brand" is. The video should be designed around a question, a comparison, a process or a decision the user can actually articulate.
2. Create reference content
The formats with the greatest potential are not necessarily the most viral ones. Tutorials, demos, comparisons, analyses, expert interviews, case studies and technical explanations contain more reusable units of information than a purely promotional video.
3. Write an extractable script
Each block should contain a direct answer, explain the reasoning and provide evidence where possible. Name brands, tools, concepts and dates explicitly; overusing pronouns such as "this", "that" or "the above" reduces the clarity of isolated fragments.
4. Review the automatic captions
Auto-generated captions can garble proper nouns, technical terms, figures and loanwords. Those are precisely the elements that matter most for identifying entities and attributing a claim. Human review is mandatory in serious corporate content.
5. Add descriptive chapters
Chapters should reflect the real architecture of the explanation and use labels that make sense outside the video. They are not a place to stack keywords, but a way to describe each segment precisely.
6. Use the description as useful metadata
A good description includes a short summary, the main entities, the resources cited, relevant links and the chapter list. Copying a generic commercial intro into every video dilutes the differential information of each piece.
