Introduction

The figure that changes everything

88%

of the sources cited by AI assistants don’t appear in Google’s Top 10 for that same prompt.

Only 12% of the URLs cited by AI assistants are in Google’s Top 10 for the same prompt. Source: Ahrefs

60%

of searches end without anyone clicking on anything.

Around 60% of searches end without a click through to another website (Bain–Dynata survey, December 2024). Source: Bain & Company

AI chooses its sources with different criteria: semantic relevance, information density and authority perceived in context. It doesn’t care whether you ranked first on Google. It cares whether your content answers the question better.

GEO

What GEO is and why it’s the answer

People no longer search the same way. Now they ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google with AI. And those systems don’t show ten blue links: they generate an answer and mention two or three sources. If you’re not one of those sources, you don’t exist.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the discipline that turns you into that source. It’s the way to build your digital presence so that language models choose you, cite you and recommend you when someone asks the question that matters for your business.

And no, GEO doesn’t kill SEO. It extends it. Everything you’ve built in SEO still works, but it’s no longer enough: you need an extra layer to understand how AI thinks, which sources it chooses, why it ignores you and how to change that.

Outcomes

What you’ll be able to do when you finish this book

Not “learn GEO”, which is vague and commits no one. This is exactly what you’ll be able to do:

  1. 01

    Audit

Know whether AI is ignoring you or citing you, with concrete data and a reproducible methodology.

  2. 02

    Restructure

Reorganise your website so that language models choose you as a source instead of your competitors.

  3. 03

    Measure

Check month by month whether you’re gaining or losing ground in the answers of ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

  4. 04

    Systematise

Build the complete system: measurement, diagnosis, execution and monitoring. Not a one-off check, but an ongoing process.

  5. 05

    Sell

If you run a team or a consultancy, package and sell this service with a professional proposal, contract, pricing and reporting.

Contents

What is GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the discipline that turns your brand into one of the sources that ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google with AI choose, cite and recommend when someone asks the question that matters for your business. It doesn’t replace SEO: it extends it.

Do I need to know SEO to read it?

There are two ways to make the most of this book

Use it as an internal roadmap to build your GEO system from scratch, or to understand exactly what you need and delegate the implementation to Elevam. Whatever you decide, start by reading it.
