How to make an SEO Budget: (Download editable template or pdf)

Do you want to start working on the web positioning of other companies and/or clients but don't know how to make an SEO budget?

As you surely already know, making an SEO budget for a very small corporate website isn't the same as for an online store with more than 1,000 products. Each SEO agency or freelance SEO consultant has a different way of making an SEO budget and of course, a completely different SEO price.

That's why I'm going to give you the factors we take into account here at Fullseo to develop the budget for an SEO strategy.

Let's set the scene: A new client has come to our agency requesting an SEO budget (SEO quote) for their website.

There are clients who, when contacting your company or requesting the budget, give you all kinds of details about their website so that you can make the budget, and others who simply tell you "I need my website to appear on Google when my products/services are searched for".

What factors must be taken into account when preparing an SEO budget?

The first and most important thing when making an SEO budget is to have an idea of the business you're going to budget for. To do this, the best option to know the project is either for the client to come with clear ideas and tell you from the start what they need and all possible details of their website, or through a briefing. In any case, you'll need to know all these factors:

  • Website domain: to be able to analyze it on your own and take a look in case any improvement comes to mind to offer the client.
  • Date for which they want to start working on SEO: to rush the project or check its viability.
  • Small description of the business: which includes the activity it carries out, the sector in which it operates and its evolution in recent years. To see the current state of the sector, analyze the competition…
  • Whether SEO has been worked on previously and what its results were: this is key to whether to decide to work or not. Since it may be that the previous company that worked the SEO had bad results and the client doesn't know them and ends up blaming you for those bad results.
  • Whether Marketing campaigns have been carried out: to see what other sources the website's traffic comes from.
  • Their competitors and evolution in case they know: To analyze competitors, their weaknesses and strengths to achieve adequate positioning goals.
  • What they think is their target audience.
  • The goals of doing SEO they have for the business.
  • Budget they have in mind for a monthly SEO price. (Do NOT include it in the case of high-level companies)
  • In which languages they want to work SEO: A job for a national-level website doesn't imply the same needs as an international website. If the market is bigger, the budget and actions to be taken will be greater.

Once we have all this data, if we still have doubts, we hold a meeting in which to bring all doubts to light and resolve them all, both on your part as SEO consultant or SEO Agency and on the client's part.

How many types of SEO budget exist?

There are different types of SEO budget that you can offer or request and of course, their price varies depending on difficulty or periodicity. The most demanded budgets are:

  • Monthly budget or SEO maintenance price: With this type of budget, you pay a fixed amount per month for SEO maintenance, that is, you improve your link profile, look for new keywords to attack, improve popularity, your traffic… continuous optimization.
  • SEO budget per hour: The actions to be carried out are taken into account and the work hours they will entail are set. Therefore, you only have to pay for the hours worked.
  • Scaled budget: You start with a small or basic budget and as you improve positions and reach goals, the monthly fee increases.

In addition, we can also differentiate the types of budget by type of website we are addressing:

  • SEO budget for corporate websites: This is one of the most common budgets and is aimed at websites that offer information about their business and want to try to position their website for brand searches and related to the services they offer in their business.
  • SEO budget for online stores: Here the price of doing SEO varies depending on whether it's a small recently created online store or an online store with more than 1,000-3,000 urls.
  • SEO budget for comparators: They are websites that are dedicated to comparing different products or services from all the websites that offer them so that users opt for the best option.
  • SEO budget for affiliate websites: They are websites that look like a store but really aren't. They offer products through affiliate links to marketplaces like Amazon or AliExpress.

1. Premises

Here you must leave in writing to the client everything they need, what they have requested and any proposal on your part after the brief project study. In addition, you must indicate that the prices shown in the SEO budget are with VAT or without VAT.

2. Methodology you'll carry out in the SEO Strategy

Show how and what steps you'll perform during the SEO strategy. Thus, you'll give confidence to the client by showing that you understand the subject and that you'll solve most of their positioning problems.

In addition, you have to create a web architecture through Keyword Research or, if the client already has one, we propose new ideas or improvements that can optimize their web architecture.

  • Content Marketing: Depending on the size of the website, it will have one price or another since more hours of work will be required. Even so, in this case, content or texts oriented to conversion with a heading structure and optimized based on Keyword Research are created.

Here, you can also include a blog strategy to add value to users, give confidence and credibility to your business and above all, solve possible doubts regarding your products and/or services.

  • On-Page SEO Strategy: Where you'll analyze more than 80 SEO factors (Metatitles, metadescriptions, links, headings, images, Core Web Vitals…) and we create a report to present it at the end of the audit.

In addition, we look at each point in detail to solve or improve it. But, careful, the cost of this part will vary depending on the size of the website (number of urls) and the languages you want to attack.

  • Off-Page SEO Strategy: The internal popularity of the website in question is analyzed to know the pages that are most visited. In addition, we see where the backlinks this website has come from, their quality, the anchor texts used, the location, etc. so that we can plan this strategy.

Remember to warn the client that with this strategy, you also monitor backlinks to avoid future penalties and that if these are purchased links, they will have to pay the cost of buying that link outside the SEO budget cost.

  • Web Analytics: so that the client knows and understands more or less how we work and how their website improves. Use the main metrics for a website such as Audience, Acquisition, Behavior and Conversions.

3. Include the costs of other plans

If the client asks you for other services you offer at a fixed cost, for example, a redesign of their website, a Social Media or Branding strategy, remember to include it in the budget. Also break down the prices of each part so they see which are fixed costs and which would be monthly.

4. Payment Methods

Include your payment preferences to the client and the validity time of the budget you send them. For example, 50% in advance upon accepting the budget and the rest at the end, if the budget is valid for what period, etc.
